RIP Steve Albini
As most of you will have heard by now, we recently & very suddenly lost the peerless Steve Albini. A true visionary and creative force who sat at the heart of so many incredible records that Jason and countless other artists made.
You can see Steve & Magnolia Electric Co. working together here in Ben Schreiner’s ‘Recording Josephine’ documentary.
The Guardian have also published a rundown of some of Albini’s greatest recordings including the Magnolia Electric Co. that is worth digging into.
Finally, here is the Electrical Audio studio map taken from the 2002 ‘The Magnolia Electric Co’ sessions with Steve Albini, previously shared with us by Songs: Ohia Jeff Pannall.

Phil Waldorf on Songs: Ohia - March 1998
We also recently stumbled onto this write up from Dead Oceans co-founder & Secretly Group co-owner Phil Waldorf, written for Flagpole Magazine back in 1998 when he lived in Athens, Georgia. Note the $4 ticket price for the show - pretty reasonable…

William Schaff - Hold On Magnolia
Something we have doubtless shared before but thats always worth admiring - William Schaff’s gorgeous lyric sheet for Hold On Magnolia. An original commission, this exists in a private collection in the US.

Kevin Mosby & Waxahatchee - Live in Birmingham
Two of Molina’s biggest champions in modern music, we’ll never tired of listening to Katie & Kevin pay tribute to Jason’s music. Here they are performing Farewell Transmission at a special hometown performance for the pair in Birmingham Alabama last month.

Finally, we leave you with this incredible in-depth piece from Sarah Crowder’s One Stone Substack. A deep dive into Molina’s use of birds in his imagery and so much more. We really enjoyed this piece.
Thank you so much for sharing my piece, and for the lovely compliment.
