Over this way we’ve been really enjoying the newly launched season two of the Secretly Society podcast. Guests so far have included Dead Oceans label founder with Secretly Group founder Chris Swanson, artist Jamila Woods, and most recently Kevin Morby. During this episode, Kevin spoke candidly and fondly of his love for Jason's music and its continued legacy.
“These are like the best songs ever…this is like discovering ‘Harvest’ by Neil Young, but a lot of people haven’t heard it” - Kevin Morby on The Magnolia Electric Co.

Out today via New Feelings records, this new album from Maine-based singer/songwriter Jesse Kivel was recently brought to our attention. Jesse’s second LP, ‘Life and Death at Party Rock’ is dedicated to Jason Molina, and he says of new single ‘Age Of Man’:
“A revisiting of Jason Molina (who the album is dedicated to) and early Neil Young color the lyrics and vocal style on ‘Age of Man’ with stacked harmonies courtesy of Kacey Johansing and Matt Popieluch”

“He then refracts his ideas through a kaleidoscopic lens of influences, including the likes of Molina and Berman, but not limited to them. “Especially the later Magnolia Electric Co. records,” he interjects when Molina’s name comes up. “There’s some humorous stuff, some clever wordplay. But another band I really love is Drive-By Truckers; they have a lot of lines that’ll make you laugh, but their stories have a level of sadness and, some of the time, anger to them as well. A lot of movies that I like are like that.”
At this point, it’s fairly well documented that we’re big fans of MJ Lenderman and his various musical projects. In this recent interview with Loud and Quiet, he once again made references to Jason’s significant influence on his work. Read the full piece here.
Most recently, he has announced the forthcoming live album ‘And The Wind (Live and Loose!)’ (which is available to pre-order now), and has shared a new live video for ‘You Have Bought Yourself A Boat'‘ which you can watch below.
